On Monday, 19 February, CSIC president, Eloísa del Pino, visited the Centre for Theoretical Physics and Mathematics (CFTMAT), which houses the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) and the Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT). Also José María Martell, CSIC vice-president of Scientific and Technical Research (VICYT) and former director of ICMAT, and Isabel Martínez, chief of Staff to the President, were part of this visit.

They met with the management teams of both institutes and the Centre. On one hand, with Javier Aramayona and Ana Bravo, director and vice-director of ICMAT, respectively. On the other hand, with José Luis Fernández Barbón, director of IFT and CFTMAT, and Carlos Roberto Pena, vice-director of IFT, as well as with Clara Isabel García-Suelto Huerta, manager of the Centre. Del Pino and Martell also conversed with the rest of the staff of the two institutes: researchers, technicians, management, and administration. Both shared the work they are carrying out to make CSIC a prominent actor in the international scientific scene.

The BBVA Foundation announced on 14 February the names of the recipients of its XVI Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences. In this edition, the award went to Claire Voisin, from the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS, France), and Yakov Eliashberg, from Stanford University (USA). The jury highlighted both outstanding contributions of both researchers to the areas of algebraic and symplectic geometry, respectively, and the connection between them. Eliashberg has made fundamental contibutions to symplectic geometry and topology. Voisin, on the other hand, is one of the leading international specialists in algebraic geometry. Her work has also recently been recognised with the Crafoord Prize in Mathematics 2024.

Both Voisin and Eliashberg have a close relationship with ICMAT. Since 2020, Voisin has been a member of its External Scientific Advisory Committee and has a strong connection with the group led by Oscar García-Prada, CSIC profesor de investigación at ICMAT. Eliashberg is in contact with the group led by Francisco Presas, CSIC investigador científico at ICMAT.

The European Congress of Mathematics (ECM), organized by the European Mathematical Society (EMS), has been bringing together the European mathematical community every four years since 1992 in a different city on the continent. The 9th edition, which is taking place this year, will be held in Seville.

From 15 -19 July,  conferences and talks, panel discussions, symposia, and thematic and parallel sessions will take place, among other activities. Ángel Castro, CSIC científico titular in ICMAT, and David Pérez García, professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and member of ICMAT, will be two of the invited speakers on this occasion. In addition, the EMS Prizes will be awarded, recognizing the outstanding contributions of European mathematicians or those who work on the continent, under the age of 35. The Felix Klein Prize and the Otto Neugebauer Prize will also be awarded.

ICMAT, through its Equality Commission, once again joined hundreds of activities scheduled for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, commemorated on 11 February. On Tuesday, 13 February, Yamilet Quintana, postdoctoral researcher at ICMAT and assistant professor at Carlos III University of Madrid, conducted the workshop "Calculating the area and perimeter of flat figures with homogeneous smart groups." Thirty 1st Bachillerato students participated in the activity.

During the workshop, students reinforced their knowledge of calculating the area and perimeter of flat figures by constructing mosaics with tangram puzzle pieces.
