ICMAT hosted more than 150 young researchers from different parts of Spain and other countries, such as France, Italy, the Netherlands, or Morocco, in the fifth edition of the BYMAT congress, Bringing Young Mathematicians Together. For most of them, it was the first time they shared their scientific contributions with the mathematical community.

From 13 to 16 November, a total of 130 talks took place in five parallel sessions, including four invited speakers: Vanesa Guerrero (UC3M), Pablo Candela (UAM-ICMAT), Ángel González Prieto (UCM-ICMAT), and Makrina Agaoglou (UPM), young researchers in more advanced stages of their careers. Unlike other conferences focused on specific research areas, the BYMAT programme covered a wide range of research topics, from the study of prime numbers to data analysis, deep learning, or even mathematics related to the Big Bang. Workshops on research-related topics, such as mental health during doctoral studies, were also included.

On 15 November, the event 'Matemáticas y magia: Remezclados' took place at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid. The show was directed by Nelo Maestre, a disseminator, magician, and mathematics teacher trainer, along with Carlos Vinuesa, a magician and secondary education teacher involved in the ESTALMAT Madrid project. The activity primarily featured magic tricks related to card shuffling. This event was part of the outreach series 'Matemáticas en la Residencia,' organized by ICMAT in collaboration with the Deputy Vice Presidency for Scientific Culture of the CSIC (VACC). Additionally, it was included in the CSIC's Science and Technology Week. David Martín de Diego (ICMAT-CSIC) presented the activity.

In an interview, Maestre and Vinuesa discussed the relationship between the two disciplines, which you can read on the following link.

The CSIC centres in Cantoblanco organise a film series in support of Iranian women

During the months of November and December, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November) and Human Rights Day (10 December) are commemorated. In light of this, UN Women has launched the campaign '16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence' this year.

In this context, the Intercenter CSIC+UAM Equality Network, of which ICMAT is part, has organized a film series in support of Iranian women from 17 November to 15 December. Specifically, the activity is organized in solidarity with the protest movement initiated in Iran after the assassination of Jina Mahsa Amini on 22 September 2022, while she was detained by Iranian morality police. The event will be held at 3:00 PM in the Red Room of the Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT). The films that has already been screened are "Persepolis" (17 November) and "The Day I Became a Woman" (24 November). There will be screened also "Life and a Day" (1 December) and "Inside the Iranian Uprising" (15 December).

Specialists in operator theory and geometric function theory gather at ICMAT

The interrelation between classical areas of mathematics such as complex analysis and geometric function theory with operator theory in Hilbert spaces has been crucial in the 20th and 21st centuries for solving significant problems. The workshop Holomorphic Flows vs. Semigroup (Operator) Theory, focusing on these topics, took place at ICMAT on 30 November and 1 December.

The programme of the event, which was attended by more than 30 people, consisted of six talks. Among them, the one of Filippo Bracci, professor of geometry at the Università di Roma 'Tor Vergata,' which inaugurated the workshop. Bracci is one of the world's leading experts in the geometric function theory of several complex variables and its application in operator theory. He has also been part of the Distinguished Professors programme of the ICMAT's Severo Ochoa project since 2020.

The 5th edition of steMatEsElla kicks off, the mentoring programme for young individuals pursuing STEM careers

On 6 November, the fifth edition of the steMatEsElla programme was launched in Madrid. This initiative aims to enhance the presence of women in scientific and technological fields by pairing established professionals with students in these domains. The programme is organized by the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME) and the Asociación Española de Ejecutiv@s y Consejer@s (EJE&CON), with the support of ICMAT, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), and Ackermann International.

SteMatEsElla is a mentoring programme specifically designed for women, with the goal of promoting and supporting their academic and professional growth. It is open to undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. Professionals can provide valuable guidance to mentees, offering support and motivation to help them achieve their professional goals.

The deadline for the programme registration is 6 December and can be completed through the following link.
Probabilistic Interpretation of Partial Differential Equations at ICMAT and UAM

From 20 to 24 November, ICMAT and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) brought together around 70 specialists at the intersection of probability and partial differential equations (PDEs) from various countries, including Argentina, the United States, Finland, Japan, Ukraine, Poland, Spain, among others. This gathering took place at the Probabilistic and Game Theoretical Interpretation of PDEs congress, organized by Fernando Quirós (ICMAT-UAM), Félix del Teso (ICMAT-UAM), and Julio D. Rossi (University of Buenos Aires). This activity is part of the thematic period on PDEs ICMAT-UAM, held from May to December.
