From 19 September, 150 students aged between 12 and 18 meet every Friday of the school year to enjoy mathematics at the Little Institute of Mathematics (Pequeño Instituto de Matemáticas, PIM) of ICMAT, from 17:30 to 20:00, at the Institute’s premises. The activity focuses on tackling, collaboratively, challenging mathematical problems that require more than simply applying a formula.

Daniel Corrales and David Ríos, CSIC researchers at ICMAT, together with Marino J. González from the University of La Rioja, have developed a mathematical model to identify a better strategy for the early detection of colorectal cancer. The study, published in Computers in Biology and Medicine, shows that a strategy for screening based on a more personalised approach increases the number of early-stage cases detected, while using the same resources as the current one.

The science carried out in European centres and laboratories took to the streets on 26 September for the European Researchers’ Night.  ICMAT joint once again the CSIC centres and institutes of the Cantoblanco Campus (Madrid) to organise “CSIC Calls You Tonight”, a major science fair that took place, for the second consecutive year, at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica, located on Madrid’s Gran Vía.

As part of the programme, ICMAT offered two experimental workshops for all audiences: “Mathematics in Motion: A Look at the World of Fluids”, given by Andrés Laín Sanclemente, José Antonio Lucas and Mencía Reborido, predoctoral researchers at the Institute; and “Mathematics of Electronic Music”, by Carlos García Meixide, predoctoral researcher at ICMAT.

Babel Raïssa Guemdjo Kamdem has been a lecturer and researcher at the Advanced School of Economic and Commercial Sciences of the University of Douala (Cameroon) since 2021. In May 2025, she joined the DataLab group at ICMAT, led by David Ríos (ICMAT-CSIC), through the scientific cooperation programme Science by Women, run by the Women for Africa Foundation, which this year celebrates its 10th edition. Guemdjo will continue her research at the Institute until next October on a project focused on data analysis, machine learning and time series.
