From June to December 2023, various scientific activities (workshops, conferences, courses, commemorations) related to the field of partial differential equations (PDEs) took place at ICMAT and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). These events were part of the thematic semester organized by both institutions. From 18 to 20 December, a closing workshop was organized as part of the programme, bringing together specialists from different countries such as Spain, Switzerland, Italy, or Australia, covering various topics, including elliptic problems, non-local framework, ABP estimates, Lane-Emden equation, free boundary problems, games, etc.

In the final stretch of the semester, the minicourses on Nonlocal Equations and Applications took place as well. Conducted by Enrico Valdinoci and Serena Dipierro, members of the University of Western Australia, they were held from 13 to 15 December. These courses were specifically aimed at researchers in the early stages of their careers.

Collaborators of Manuel de León, CSIC profesor de investigación at ICMAT, gathered at the De León Fest 2023 conference to celebrate his 70th birthday. It was held from 11 to 13 December at the ICMAT.

The activity focused on the field of geometric mechanics, in which De León "is one of the leading figures globally," said David Martín de Diego, CSIC investigador científico at ICMAT and one of the organizers of the workshop. "Some of Manuel de León's results in different topics such as nonholonomic mechanics, field theory geometry, contact geometry, or continuous media are cornerstones in these fields of science," he explained.

ICMAT's institutional video

A recently published video on the YouTube channel of mathematical culture of ICMAT introduces the Institute and the work carried out there. The video includes statements from Javier Aramayona, ICMAT director and CSIC científico titular; Diego Córdoba, CSIC profesor de investigación at ICMAT and scientific director of the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation; Ana Bravo, ICMAT vice-director and profesora titular at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM); and David Martín de Diego, CSIC investigador científico and ICMAT Mathematical Culture Unit scientific director.

This material has been produced by the science communication company Scienseed in collaboration with ICMAT. It features original music composed and performed by Piergiulio Tempesta, ICMAT researcher and professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), and is funded by the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation.

Open Calls
Yo investigo. Yo soy CSIC contest. The Graduate and Specialization Department (DPE) of CSIC organises the annual scientific outreach competition 'Yo investigo. Yo soy CSIC'. This competition aims to promote dissemination and communication skills of predoctoral research personnel. The main purpose is to showcase the research work carried out by the predoctoral research personnel in various research groups at CSIC.
Deadline: 15 January 2024

"la Caixa" INPhINIT Incoming Programme. ICMAT has opened 10 positions for the INPhINIT incoming scholarship modality of the 2024 call for the "la Caixa" Foundation INPhINIT PhD programme. These grants are intended for researchers who wish to carry out their doctoral project in STEM areas at Spanish research centres accredited with the Spanish Severo Ochoa Excellence Award, such as ICMAT.

Deadline: 30 January 2024

Grants for Ramón y Cajal (RYC) Contracts 2023. The purpose of these grants, under the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2021-2023, is to promote the incorporation of research personnel, both Spanish and foreign, into research institutions, who have a distinguished track record. The objective is for them to acquire the competencies and capabilities that enable them to secure a stable position in a research institution within the Spanish System of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Specifically, these grants aim to encourage the integration of researchers who have been conducting their professional activities abroad for a certain period.

Deadline: 11 January - 1 February 2024

Grants for Juan de la Cierva Contracts 2023. Grants, under the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2021-2023, aimed at promoting the incorporation of young individuals holding a doctoral degree, with the purpose of completing their postdoctoral research training in Spanish R&D centres.
Deadline: 17 - 31 January for researchers; 17 January - 7 February for centres
