Model theory provides a logical framework for distinguishing between mathematical structures with predictable behaviour and others of extreme complexity. Through concepts such as stability and VC-dimension, this discipline connects logic with areas as diverse as combinatorics, algebra and machine learning, opening up new ways of understanding what makes a mathematical structure controllable—or not. On 6 February, Julia Wolf (University of Cambridge) presented her recent contributions to this topic, which have aimed at extending these notions so that they apply to mathematical structures described by formulas in more than two variables, which constitute the majority. The talk took place at the Joint Mathematics Colloquium ICMAT–UAM–UCM–UC3M under the title “Where do you draw the (dividing) line?”.

Javier Gómez Serrano is a researcher at Brown University (USA) and a specialist in partial differential equations. He completed his PhD at the ICMAT under the supervision of Diego Córdoba (ICMAT-CSIC) and, like his former supervisor, focuses his research on the study of the formation of singularities in the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations, one of the Clay Mathematics Institute’s Millennium Prize Problems and the subject of intense international scientific competition. Through an innovative combination of analytical techniques and neural networks, Gómez Serrano has achieved significant advances in this field. In recognition of his work, he has been invited to deliver the lecture devoted to the Navier–Stokes problem within the Millennium Prize Problem Lecture Series, organised by Harvard University (USA). Last year, he received two international awards: one of the MCA Awards (Mathematical Congress of the Americas), from the Mathematical Council of the Americas, and the R. E. Moore Award.

ICMAT celebrates 11 February with activities on women mathematicians
|
|
ICMAT once again joined the commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated every 11 February to highlight the contribution of women to scientific progress and to encourage vocations among girls and young women. To mark this occasion, ICMAT organised a range of outreach activities aimed at students and the general public, which showcased the presence and role of women in the history of mathematics. All of these actions were part of the campaign ‘We All Do Science’, promoted by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in connection with 11 February:
- Workshop: “Guess Who (Mathematics Edition)”. ICMAT received students in 2º and 3º ESO, who met women working in mathematical research in person. Through a logic game, they deduced different aspects of their professional and biographical trajectories.
- Scientific demonstrations: “They Shape the Future”. Event organised by the CSIC centres on the Cantoblanco Campus, in collaboration with the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Madrid, for students in the upper years of secondary education. This event brought together six scientific demonstrations in different areas of knowledge, led by women researchers, among them was Mencía Reborido, predoctoral researcher at ICMAT. The streaming is available on this link.
- Talks on Maryam Mirzakhani. Javier Aramayona, CSIC researcher at ICMAT and director of the centre, gave a series of outreach talks focused on the life and work of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal.

From 23 to 27 February, the 11th International Workshop on Information Geometry, Quantum Mechanics and Applications was held at ICMAT. This was “an international meeting dedicated to the analysis of the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics and its many applications, focusing today mainly on emerging problems related to quantum information theories and issues related to field theory, both classical and quantum,” explained Alberto Ibort (ICMAT-UC3M), one of its organizers. The program included a two-session mini-course taught by Carlo Rovelli, a theoretical physicist and writer, expert in quantum gravity, and one of the founders of loop quantum gravity theory, and 15 talks by specialists in these fields.

On Thursday, 29 January, 30 students from Year 4 of Primary School to Year 1 of Secondary School from various educational centres in Madrid visited ICMAT. During the activity, which took place from 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm, the young people were able to see first-hand the work of a mathematics research centre.

ICMAT is organising the following key activity in the coming months:
Furthermore, ICMAT hosts weekly thematic seminars where researchers from each area share their latest results.
