Abstract: Emmy Noether (1882–1935) is, without doubt, a crucial figure in the development of modern science. She is regarded as the founder of modern algebra and her contributions were fundamental to the advancement of contemporary physics. She was the first woman to be invited as a plenary speaker at an International Congress of Mathematicians, the most important event in the discipline. In this conversation between Yvette, Tudor and Edith, we will explore some of her contributions, achieved despite the countless obstacles she encountered throughout her life.
This event is part of the Poisson 2022 Conference, taking place from 25 to 29 July at the ICMAT and at the CSIC headquarters.
About the speakers and moderator
Yvette Kosmann-Schwarzbach has taught and conducted research at the University of Lille I and at the École polytechnique in France. Her contributions have had a significant impact on differential geometry, algebra, and mathematical physics. She is the author of the book The Noether Theorems: Invariance and Conservation Laws in the Twentieth Century (Springer, 2011), on the famous Noether theorems.
Tudor Ratiu is a researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China). He is one of the most prominent international figures in the field of geometric mechanics and dynamical systems. He is co-author, with Jerrold E. Marsden, of Introduction to Mechanics and Symmetry: A Basic Exposition of Classical Mechanics (Springer, 2010), one of the reference books in the field, in which Noether’s results are applied in mathematical physics.
Edith Padrón has been a Senior Lecturer in Geometry and Topology at the University of La Laguna since 1993. Her research focuses on geometric mechanics, a topic on which she has published several research articles. A member of the Spanish thematic network in Geometry, Mechanics and Control, she was the first president of the “Women and Mathematics” Committee of the Spanish Royal Mathematical Society from 2005 to 2009. She is the author of the biography “Emmy Noether” and contributed the chapter “Having Tea with Emmy” to the book “Mujeres matemáticas. 13 matemáticas, 13 espejos”.
