Abstract: Mathematics can be a rich and inspiring element in children’s and young adult literature—not as a forced or anecdotal addition, but organically integrated, that is, as a substantial part of the stories and as an effective tool for the imagination. This is also an effective way of spreading and popularising mathematical discourse. Carlo Frabetti, author of more than a hundred books, will speak about the relationship between mathematics and narrative, especially from the perspective of children.
Carlo Frabetti is an Italian writer and mathematician based in Catalonia. He is an active author of children’s and young adult literature as well as scientific outreach. Creator and scriptwriter of La bola de cristal and other television programmes. He has published around one hundred books (many aimed at children and young people), among which, for their relation to science, the following stand out: Malditas matemáticas (Alfaguara, 2002), Maldita física (Ediciones SM, 2012), El gran juego (Ediciones SM, 2011), La torre de Hanói (Lengua de Trapo, 2009), El juego de la ciencia (Lengua de Trapo, 2009) and ¿El huevo o la gallina? (Alianza Editorial, 2015). He writes a weekly column on logic and recreational mathematics in Materia, called “El juego de la ciencia”.
