Horizons of Mathematics, with Eleonora di Nezza (Universidad de Roma Tor Vergata, Italia)

The magic of Kähler geometry and the challenges of the Calabi Program

Kähler geometry studies spaces endowed with an exceptionally rich structure, arising from the intersection of three distinct geometries. This versatility makes it possible to tackle difficult problems concerning the metrics, that determine the curvature of these spaces, some of them connected to theoretical physics, and gathered in a list arranged by difficulty following the Calabi Program. At the Joint ICMAT–UAM–UCM–UC3M Mathematics Colloquium, on 7 November, Eleonora Di Nezza, Professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, presented the techniques developed over the past two decades for studying special metrics on Kähler manifolds.

ICMAT and the other centres of excellence in the SOMMa alliance meet in Valencia

On 13 and 14 November, 100xCiencia.9 was held at CaixaForum València. It is the annual meeting of the SOMMa Alliance, made up of institutions recognised under the Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence and María de Maeztu Units (CEX) programme of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, among which is ICMAT. The ninth edition of the congress was celebrated under the motto “Science for society, touching consciences”, which aligns with one of the network’s main goals. “The SOMMa alliance is strongly committed to making the scientific work of the centres transcend their walls and become a dialogue with society. We want to share the major scientific achievements of the centres, attract more people to scientific careers, and promote the idea that science is crucial in everyday life and, in particular, in political decision-making”, says Javier Aramayona, director of ICMAT and vice-president of SOMMa.

Online course: "LaTeX for Secundary School Teachers".  This 5-hour online course is designed for teachers who wish to acquire skills in writing scientific and educational documents with LaTeX. LaTeX is a free text composition system that is very useful for producing texts containing a large number of mathematical expressions. Throughout the course, participants will learn how to structure documents, include mathematical notation and graphics, and manage bibliographic references efficiently. This will enable them to generate high-quality teaching materials (exams, notes and articles). No prior knowledge of LaTeX is required, only familiarity with basic computer use.
This course will take place on 13, 20, 27 January, 3 and 10 February 2026, from 17:00 to 18:00. It will be taught by Andrés Laín, predoctoral student at ICMAT.

Deadline: 6/01/2026

"¿Es la realidad como pensamos? Matemáticas y cuántica para descifrarla", Alberto Ibort (ICMAT-UC3M)

On 4 November, Alberto Ibort (ICMAT-UC3M) gave the lecture “Is reality as we believe? Mathematics and quantum theory to decipher it”, as part of the series Mathematics at the Residencia, at the Residencia de Estudiantes (Madrid). The talk offered a journey through the theories that have redefined what we understand as “reality”, from Isaac Newton’s cosmology and Albert Einstein’s relativity to Roger Penrose’s three worlds and the simulation hypothesis, in light of new quantum technologies. The talk is now available on the ICMAT Mathematical Culture YouTube channel.

Magic and mathematics, with Antonietta Mira (Università della Svizzera italiana, Switzerland)

In this video, Antonietta Mira, researcher and professor of Statistics at the Università della Svizzera italiana (Switzerland), performs three mathematical magic tricks. The video is available on the ICMAT Mathematical Culture YouTube channel.
