The Small Institute of Mathematics expands its reach in Torrejón de Ardoz

23 October, 2026

The Gauss Mathematics Circle of Torrejón de Ardoz opens this October for students from Guadalajara and the Henares Corridor, from 4th year of Primary School to 2nd year of Secondary School. The initiative is free of charge and has the support of the Small Institute of Mathematics (PIM) of ICMAT and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Mathematics (IMI) of the Complutense University of Madrid.

There are boys and girls who are passionate about basketball, football or dance, and others who are passionate about solving maths problems. Mathematics circles are created to offer the latter a space of their own, different from what they learn in class. This is the case of the Small Institute of Mathematics (PIM), an ICMAT initiative in which students work in groups to solve complex mathematical problems, and which started its fifth academic year at the end of September. Now, linked to the PIM and also with the support of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Mathematics (IMI) of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Gauss Mathematics Circle of Torrejón de Ardoz is born.

The project, coordinated by mathematician Robert Alexandru Croitoru Sandu, expands the Mathematics Workshop “Los Pequeños Gauss”, which has been held for six years in collaboration with Torrejón de Ardoz Town Hall. It was inaugurated yesterday in the presence of the mayor of this town, Alejandro Navarro Prieto, the councillor for education, Rubén Martínez, Javier Aramayona, director of ICMAT, Andrei Jaikin, director of PIM, Gustavo Muñoz, director of IMI, and Martín Avendaño, from UCM.

Sessions will take place on Thursdays, from 18:30 to 20:00, at the Centro Cultural Las Fronteras, from October to April. Participants are divided into two groups: one from 4th to 6th year of Primary School, with 15 places, and another from 1st and 2nd year of Secondary School, with 12. The Gauss Mathematics Circle of Torrejón de Ardoz, like the PIM, is not designed for high-ability students, but is open to anyone who wants to explore mathematics.

The teaching materials from the workshop, compiled over these years, will be available on the PIM problem database. Its database brings together nearly 3,000 exercises and theoretical introductions.
