ICMAT launches its TikTok channel to make math more accessible to young people

13 March, 2026

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) is launching its TikTok channel (@ICMATes) today, dedicated to popularizing mathematics among young audiences through short, visual, and accessible formats. The first video, which demonstrates a method for approximating the number pi, commemorates International Mathematics Day on March 14, chosen because the date (in its North American notation) coincides with the first digits of pi.

With the launch of this channel, ICMAT reinforces its commitment to outreach through digital platforms, with the goal of transforming the perception many young people have of mathematics and showcasing its creative, surprising, and ever-present role in everyday life. Platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have established themselves in recent years as key tools for disseminating scientific knowledge to broad and diverse audiences.

This is a pioneering project: it is the first TikTok channel by a mathematics institution in Spanish. To maximize its reach, the project will be developed in collaboration with Quantum Fracture, one of the most successful science communication production companies in Spanish on this platform.

The channel will publish short videos in which pre-doctoral researchers from the center will explain mathematical concepts in a clear and engaging way, with the aim of promoting mathematics among young audiences, increasing ICMAT’s visibility, and fostering conversation and interaction around this discipline on TikTok.

The initiative is funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) as part of its call for grants to promote scientific, technological, and innovation culture.
