Resumen:
Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are devices with moving parts only a few micrometres in size: the accelerometers and microphones in a mobile phone, the micro-mirrors in a projector, the nozzles of an inkjet printer, or micro-pumps and sensors in medical instruments. At this scale the familiar rules change: surface forces dominate volume forces, gravity becomes irrelevant, electrostatic forces become very effective, and viscosity dominates inertia. Mathematical modelling is the tool that lets us understand, predict and design such devices before they are built.
