About:
Luis Álvarez Cónsul is científico titular (tenured position) at Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas – ICMAT. His research interests lie in pure mathematics, specifically in algebraic geometry and differential geometry and in their interplay with representation theory and theoretical physics. He is especially interested in geometric structures associated to moduli spaces parametrizing objects of various kinds, such as bundles, quiver representations, algebraic varieties and solutions of equations of gauge type.
Álvarez Cónsul carried out his undergraduate studies in Seville and Madrid, and obtained his PhD in physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2000. He has held full-time academic positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a research assistant professor, the University of Bath and CSIC. He has been a recipient of a Marie Curie fellowship and a Ramón y Cajal research contract.
Álvarez Cónsul has written papers in algebraic geometry and differential geometry. His publications include articles in Inventiones Mathematicae, Journal of the European Mathematical Society , Geometry and Topology, Crelle and Communications in Mathematical Physics. He is PI for the period 2026-2029, together with Oscar García Prada, of the Research Grant “Higgs bundles, integrable systems and moment map equations”, Ref. No. PID2025-174260NB-C22, funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Proyectos de investigación no orientada). Earlier he was also co PI for the period 2023-2026 of the Research Grant “Higgs pairs, integrability and canonical metrics”, Ref. No. PID2022-141387NB-C21, also funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
