European Researchers’ Night: CSIC is calling you tonight

1 September, 2026

ICMAT is once again joining the institutes and centres of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) located on the Cantoblanco Campus and in the surrounding area to celebrate the European Researchers’ Night.

Next Friday, 25 September, a major event will be held, open to the public and free of charge, to bring the science carried out at these centres closer to society. There will be workshops, scientific demonstrations, performances and a science fair covering a wide range of research topics.

This year, ICMAT is taking part with the experimental workshop “Mathematics in Motion: A Look at the World of Fluids”.

ICMAT participants: Andrés Laín Sanclemente, Mencía Reborido and José Antonio Fuentes, predoctoral researchers at ICMAT.

Date: 25 September 2026.

Time:

  • 10:00–14:00. For school groups (Primary from 10:30 to 13:00; from Year 9 of secondary school to Year 13 from 10:00 to 14:00).
  • 16:00–20:00. For the general public, with free admission and no registration or booking required.

Venue: Espacio Fundación Telefónica (Gran Vía, Madrid)

ICMAT workshop

“Mathematics in Motion: A Look at the World of Fluids”

Speakers: Andrés Laín Sanclemente and Mencía Reborido, predoctoral researchers at ICMAT. Time: 16:00–20:00 Audience: General public

In this workshop, fluid-related phenomena will be explored through a series of surprising experiments. The physical and mathematical laws underlying these phenomena will also be explained, showing how mathematics can account for surprising phenomena in the physical world. Basic concepts of fluid modelling will be introduced, along with the laws that determine the behaviour of fluids.

CSIC is calling you tonight

Morning activities: science fair for Primary, secondary school, sixth form and vocational education students

Throughout the morning, we will hold a large science fair in separate areas for Primary and secondary school students. The programme will include our famous ‘Science Trolley’; we will explore the secrets of glass and ceramics, play with catalysts, hydrogen fuel cells and the periodic table, discover what AFMs are, and taste seaweed.

Of course, our Escape Road will also be back: in search of Nobel and non-Nobel women. In this treasure hunt, students will have fun while learning about the names, work and stories of great women scientists from around the world.
This year, secondary school students will also attend a live recording of an episode of the Ciencia para Leer podcast, hosted by Carmen Guerrero from the CSIC Office of the Deputy Vice-Presidency for Scientific Culture.
Applications for places will open on 14 September at 09:00 via the link provided by the organisers.

Afternoon activities: exclusive workshops, science fair, theatre and a science concert for all audiences

FREE ADMISSION — NO REGISTRATION OR BOOKING REQUIRED

At 16:00, we will open the doors of Espacio Fundación Telefónica and invite you to get your SCIENCE PASSPORT, which you will complete with stickers as you visit all the centres taking part in the event: for each activity, you will receive a sticker to place in your passport (in whichever order you prefer) in order to receive a final gift.

There will be…
• A science fair with scientific demonstrations from virtually every field of knowledge.
• Closed-door workshops exploring diverse worlds ranging from biology to mathematics and physics.
• PERFORMANCES for all ages:
o At 17:00, the auditorium will open its doors for ECLIPSADAS.
o At 18:00, it will be the turn of BIOLOCAS.
o At 19:00, DORO will take the stage, a play about the life of Dorotea Barnés.
