The ICMAT is participating in the Community of Madrid program “4ESO+empresa” (4th Grade Secondary Education + Company), which provides young students with the chance to pay educational visits to companies and research centers. Groups of 4th Grade Secondary School boys and girls are able to spend three days getting to know the daily activity of the Institute, with the aim of making mathematical research a career option as well as showing these students what the daily tasks of a mathematical scientist entail and what avenues of access are available to them when they leave school. The students visit the ICMAT facilities and enter into direct contact with its researchers. Furthermore, they can attend talks and workshops in which ICMAT scientists introduce them to their daily work.
The purpose is to show these students the type of work is carried out at research centers like the ICMAT and to stimulate a scientific vocation. To that end, the students experience mathematical research work at first hand and see that it is a living and dynamic science from which new results spring on a daily basis. Over this four-day period, students share the daily lives of those who work at the ICMAT and become researchers themselves.
