Abstract: Mathematical models have been very present in the media in recent years: in predicting COVID infection rates, in trying to understand what is happening with climate change, and even in forecasting exam results. How do these models work? How reliable are they? Can we trust them enough to base government policy on them? In this lecture, the renowned science communicator and mathematician Chris Budd will explain how these models are built and tested, how they can be applied, and what their limitations are.

About the speaker
Chris Budd is Professor of Applied Mathematics and Director of Knowledge Exchange at the Institute of Mathematical Innovation, University of Bath, United Kingdom. His work focuses on the applications of mathematics to the real world, including climate change, and he maintains close links with industry.
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was one of the founders of V-KEMS, a virtual forum for knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences, which played an important role in using mathematical models to address the impact of the virus.
