Abstract: For some time now, knots have been the subject of study for sailors, chemists, and mathematicians. In this talk, the focus will be mainly on the third perspective. We will explore how knots are conceived and studied in mathematics, some basic notions of knot theory, the tricks used to determine whether two knots are different or not, and the way in which they are classified. This will lead us to imagine infinitely complex knots, such as wild knots.
Aubin Arroyo is a mathematician and science communicator. He earned his PhD in Mathematics from the National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA, Brazil, 2002) and is currently a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His main research area is dynamical systems, and he also works on holomorphic dynamics, tropical geometry, and graph theory. His science communication projects intersect and converge with the arts. He was in charge of designing and curating the renovation of the mathematics exhibition, “Mathematical Imaginary”, at Universum, the Science Museum (UNAM), and more recently of the new mathematics hall at the State of Morelos Science Museum (CCYTEM).
