From 23 to 30 July, the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 was carried out in Philadelphia (United States). This is the most important gathering of the discipline worldwide. Organized by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) every four years, ICM brought together nearly 5,000 mathematicians from around the world at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Among the event’s protagonists were 14 Spaniards, including three ICMAT members: Javier Parcet and David Pérez García, as invited speakers —who talked about the Connes rigidity conjecture and the classification of quantum phases of matter, respectively— and Ágata Timón,  participant on a panel about public communication of mathematics.

Also over the last few weeks...
  • David Martín de Diego, a scientific researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and ICMAT, took part in the Aula Ciencia event, organised by the association of scientists Apadrina la Ciencia, MERK company and the UAM Faculty of Education on 29 June 2026. During the event, researchers from CSIC and UAM’s Cantoblanco Campus delivered workshops for primary school teachers, with the aim of helping them incorporate these activities into their lessons.
