A Method for Hunting Primes Inspired by Hilbert’s Tenth Problem
Ken Ono is Marvin Rosenblum Professor of Mathematics and Chancellor’s STEM Advisor at the University of Virginia (USA). His research areas include data science, mathematics and statistics. Image courtesy of the author.
A new approach based on partition theory allows the construction of modified Diophantine equations whose only integer solutions are prime numbers. Ken Ono (University of Virginia, USA) presented his results at the Joint Mathematics Colloquium ICMAT-UAM-UCM-UAM, that took place on 9 May at ICMAT, with the title "Partitions detect primes".

What is the work of a mathematics researcher like? Meet María de la Paz Tirado Hernández (ICMAT–UAM)
Watch the video on the ICMAT Mathematical Culture YouTube channel
What does it mean to conduct research in mathematics? What is the daily life of someone who works in this field like? María de la Paz Tirado Hernández, assistant lecturer at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and ICMAT member, answers to these and other questions in a video published on the ICMAT Mathematical Culture YouTube channel. This activity is part of the celebrations for 12 May, the Day of Women in Mathematics.

David Ríos Insua (ICMAT-CSIC) explores the impact of artificial intelligence in a new online series
David Ríos Insua’s research starts from complex real-world decision-making problems, which he tackles with mathematical tools from fields such as Bayesian statistics, machine learning, and risk analysis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining numerous aspects of our daily lives, from entertainment to healthcare and the workplace. This transformative potential also entails a series of risks, which David Ríos Insua, research professor in Risk Analysis and Data Science at CSIC in ICMAT, dissects in a new scientific outreach masterclass funded by the AXA Research Fund. The three-chapter series ‘Building Secure AI Futures’ is now available on the foundation’s YouTube channel.
