ICMAT is launching a pioneering project: the first Mathematics Intensive Program (MIP) for undergraduate students whose passion for mathematics drives them to deepen and expand their knowledge. The MIP will cater to the special needs of the most talented students so they can fully develop their potential. A highly select group of students starting a Mathematics degree at a university in the Community of Madrid in the 2025-26 academic year will be chosen. The entire program will be free of charge for students. It starts in October 2025, and registration is open until May 15, 2025, through an online form.

ICMAT researchers prove the existence of fluids with unexpected behavior

For the first time, scientists have theoretically proven the existence of stationary flows in which any small perturbation, such as a slight pressure change, radically alters their behavior, pulling them out of equilibrium and potentially leading to highly complex and unpredictable behaviors: turbulence. These are known as isolated stationary flows. In an article published on 21 March in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), Alberto Enciso and Daniel Peralta-Salas, researchers at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at ICMAT, together with Willi Kepplinger (University of Vienna, Austria), demonstrate that the complexity of these flows is much greater than previously thought.

Masaki Kashiwara, emeritus professor at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) and the Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study (KUIAS), both at Kyoto University (Japan), has become the second Asian mathematician to win the Abel Prize—one of the two most important awards in mathematics, alongside the Fields Medal—.  He is the first Japanese recipient among the 27 awardees to date. “Masaki Kashiwara is considered the founder of the analytic theory of D-modules, a key tool in many branches of mathematics, from number theory to mathematical physics,” says Oscar García-Prada, research professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at ICMAT.

Category Theory for Designing Quantum Computers
ICMAT brought together around 40 early-career researchers at the IX International Workshop on Information Geometry, Quantum Mechanics and Applications

From 24 to 28 February, the ICMAT brought together around 40 early-career researchers at the IX International Workshop on Information Geometry, Quantum Mechanics and Applications. They study the mathematical aspects related to quantum systems and, in particular, to quantum computers. This new technology, which could solve problems in a shorter time, still presents numerous challenges before becoming a reality.

Mathematician and computer pioneer Ada Lovelace, in theatre
On the occasion of 8 March, International Women’s Day, and 14 March, International Mathematics Day, ICMAT and the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) organised a performance of the play "Ada Byron: The Weaver of Numbers"  in Madrid. The play took place on 5 March in the Auditorium of the UC3M Leganés Campus. Afterwards, the round table discussion ‘Ada Lovelace and women in mathematics’ was celebrated with the participation of representatives of UC3M,  ICMAT and the theater company.
