Joint Mathematics Colloquium: Williams' Conjecture Holds for Meteor Graphs

Elizabeth Gillaspy, Associate Professor at the University of Montana. Imagen: Petra Lein
Elizabeth Gillaspy from the University of Montana participated in the Joint Mathematics Colloquium on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. During her talk, she presented a new result demonstrating that Williams' conjecture holds for meteor graphs, a specific class of graphs for which shift equivalence and strong shift equivalence coincide. This breakthrough, achieved in collaboration with L. Cordeiro, D. Goncalves, and R. Hazrat, combines operator-algebraic, combinatorial, and monoid-theoretic approaches.

CSIC puts two approaches to STEAM education up for debate

In Spain, the competency-based framework predominates in STEAM education. Image: Iñigo de Amescua/ ICMAT
As part of International Education Day, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) organised a conference on Monday 20 January at 17:30 to discuss different approaches to pre-university teaching of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) subjects: one that focuses on competences – which is promoted in many countries, including Spain – or one that focuses on knowledge – which is making a comeback in other countries such as Norway, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand.

Mathematical modeling – SIRENA project. ICMAT is offering a position for ocean modeling tasks in the framework of the SIRENA project. This project is developed in the Mathematical Modeling and Simulation group of ICMAT at CSIC, in a scientific and multidisciplinary environment, where we work in collaboration with transversal teams that include areas such as oceanography, remote sensing, aquaculture and knowledge transfer to sectors of the blue economy.
Deadline: Until the position is filled
2nd CSIC Awards for Transfer and Entrepreneurship. Aware of the importance of the transfer of knowledge to society within the institution as a driver of economic and social development, the CSIC Presidency has announced the second edition of the CSIC Transfer and Entrepreneurship Awards. The prizes are awarded in four categories.
Deadline: 03/02/2025
Public-private partnership projects 2024. The purpose of the aid is to advance in the incorporation of scientific and technical knowledge and results that allow the validation and pre-competitive development of new technologies, products and services, creating the appropriate context that stimulates the generation of a critical mass in R&D&I of an interdisciplinary nature for its application, transfer, search for solutions and generation of results both in the technological and innovation trajectories of companies and in the market.
Deadline: 05/02/2025
ICMAT Postdoc SO 2024 – Analysis and PDEs. ICMAT is offering a postdoctoral position for outstanding researchers in Mathematics in the area of Analysis and PDEs who wish to further their careers at ICMAT. Candidates should have a strong background in fields related to Partial Differential Equations, with a particular emphasis on fluid dynamics.
Deadline: 15/02/2025
Fundamentals Research Programme - BBVA Foundation 2024. The Fundamentals Research Programme is intended for exploratory projects that address in an innovative way central or foundational questions of a scientific or disciplinary field at its current stage of development, or questions of the same fundamental nature resulting from the intersection of several disciplines. Possible immediate practical applicability is not part of the spirit of this call. The Fundamentals Programme is open to projects led by up to two principal investigators from one or more disciplines, and may also include researchers from centres in any other country.
Deadline: 28/03/2025
MSCA COFUND 2025. The main objective of the MSCA COFUND 2025 call is to co-fund new or existing doctoral programmes as well as research staff recruitment programmes at national, regional or international level. Through these actions, the aim is to promote MSCA best practices, including international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary research training, and to foster transnational and sectoral mobility of researchers at all stages of their careers.
