From 5 to 9 May, ICMAT is holding the Advanced School on Mapping Class Groups, Surface Subgroups, Bundles, and Group Extensions. In this school, 15 specialists in the field of geometric group theory – which studies groups, an algebraic concept capturing the notion of symmetry, from a geometric perspective – will introduce, for PhD students, postdocs, and other interested participants, some of the most active topics in the area. Specifically, on mapping class groups, surface subgroups, bundles, and group extensions. This school is one of the first activities of the Bridson-Reid Laboratory,

On 14 April, the workshop First Function Field Days took place at ICMAT, focusing on the arithmetic of function fields, a branch of number theory. The conference brought together specialists in this area of mathematics to share the latest research aimed at understanding patterns and structures in number theory, such as the so-called zeta functions, Drinfeld modules or Anderson modules. This event also marked the first activity organised under the research project led by Bruno Anglès (University of Caen Normandy, France) as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at ICMAT.

From 7 to 9 April, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences once again opened its doors to students from various schools as part of the 4ºESO+Empresa programme, organised annually by the Community of Madrid. 30 students from secondary schools such as IES María Moliner in Coslada, IES Adolfo Suárez in Paracuellos de Jarama, IES Antonio López García in Getafe, and Colegio Villalkor in Alcorcón, had the opportunity to experience daily life in a centre dedicated to mathematical research. They also learnt what a research career involves and the pathway to pursue it, with the aim of presenting mathematical research as a possible career option.

On 5 April, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) and the Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT) welcomed more than 50 students from the 1st year of Baccalaureate of the educational enrichment programme for gifted and talented students (PEAC) of the Community of Madrid. From 10:00 to 13:00, the students -from the East and Centre 2 sites of the PEAC- had the opportunity to approach the world of research in mathematics and theoretical physics from the hand of its protagonists. The event, held at the UAM-CSIC campus, was organised by scientific and outreach staff from ICMAT and IFT, with the aim of encouraging scientific vocations, showcasing the work carried out at the centres and offering a participative and enriching experience.

Mathematics Intensive Program (MIP). The Mathematics Intensive Program (MIP) is a high-performance mathematics training programme for undergraduate students, who will begin their degree studies in the academic year 2025/26, organised by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences. This programme offers mentoring by ICMAT research staff to undergraduate students of Mathematics at a university in the Community of Madrid, during the consecutive years until the completion of their degree.
Deadline: 15/05/2025
V Edition Camino Program 2025. The CSIC launches the 5th edition of the CAMINO Program (Career Mentoring Initiative for New Opportunities) for predoctoral researchers in their third year, interested in broadening their professional horizons. For six months, CAMINO will pair up predoctoral researchers with experts working for business organizations or public administration. The participants (mentors and mentees) will receive initial mentoring.
Deadline: 20/05/2025
Leonardo Grants for Scientific Research and Cultural Creation, BBVA Foundation. The Leonardo Grants for Scientific Research and Cultural Creation 2025 are intended to support the development of individual projects of researchers and cultural creators in intermediate stages of their career, residing in Spain, between 30 and 45 years of age and with a highly innovative scientific, technological or cultural production. The projects will have a minimum duration of 12 months and a maximum of 18 months.
Deadline: 30/05/2025
Escuela JAE de Matemáticas 2025. The JAE School of Mathematics is organised by ICMAT and is traditionally held between June and July. The school is aimed at bachelor's and master's students interested in learning about research in mathematics and its applications. It is an opportunity for interaction between top researchers and students who enjoy doing mathematics, in an ideal and fruitful environment for research.
Deadline: 31/05/2025
MSCA COFUND 2025. The main objective of the MSCA COFUND 2025 call is to co-fund new or existing doctoral programmes as well as research staff recruitment programmes at national, regional or international level. Through these actions, the aim is to promote MSCA best practices, including international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary research training, and to foster transnational and sectoral mobility of researchers at all stages of their careers.
