As every summer, ICMAT is hosting its introductory research school for undergraduate and master's degree students: the JAE School of Mathematics. "The ICMAT maintains a strong historical commitment with the education of young researchers. The JAE School is one of our main educational projects: it aims to open a small window onto the world of research in mathematics", says Javier Aramayona, director of the ICMAT. From 24 June to 5 July, this year's programme includes six mini-courses and five introductory talks on current research questions in a wide range of fields, from number theory to geometry, differential equations and algebra, given by expert researchers.

A place to experience the pleasure of doing mathematics

In PIM, groups of four or five students try to find creative solutions to difficult mathematical problems. Image: ICMAT

The Pequeño Instituto de Matemáticas (PIM, Little Mathematics Institute)  is an initiative aimed at fostering an interest and taste for mathematics among pre-university students. Launched in 2021 by ICMAT, it follows the model of mathematical circles, in which the students themselves, in groups, try to solve complex mathematical problems. The second edition of the programme closed on 31 May and registration is now open for the third edition, which will begin in September 2024 and, like all previous editions, will be free of charge for students.

"There is no other field that gives more creative freedom than mathematics"

Alberto Verjovsky. Image: ICMAT

Alberto Verjovsky is one of the most outstanding mathematicians in Latin America and, in particular, in his country, Mexico. He is one of the leading specialists in geometry, topology and dynamics. In fact, his thesis on Anosov flows is still a reference in the field. He is currently a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, at its headquarters in Cuernavaca. This year, he recieved the Latin American Prize for Research in Mathematics 2024 in the category of Consolidated Mathematician, awarded by the Institute for Mathematical Sciences of the Americas (IMSA), with which the ICMAT collaborates in the new Enhancing Mathematical Bridges between Spain and Latin America ICMAT Programme.

"In geometry, representations allow you to see how things change, just like when making a film"

Raquel Perales. Image: ICMAT

Raquel Perales has been a researcher at the Centro de Ciencias Matemáticas (CIMAT) in Guanajuato (Mexico) since January 2024. Earlier this year she received the IMSA Latin American Mathematics Research Prize, in its first edition - in the category of young mathematicians - a recognition that she believes will open up new opportunities for her.
She began her research career because, after studying mathematics, she found that she liked geometry more than any other field, which led her down a more theoretical path. "Unlike other areas, you can make representations and see how things change, just like making a film" she says.

From 17 to 21 June, the Summer School on h-principle was held at ICMAT, an educational meeting on a very active area of current research in geometry: the h-principle. We talked to Álvaro del Pino, professor at the Universiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands, expert in the use of differential topology techniques to study geometric structures and co-organiser of the event, about this fascinating topic.

Summer school in geometry, dynamics and field theory, celebrated in the mountains of Madrid

The ICMAT International Summer School on Geometry, Dynamics and Field Theory celebrates its 16th edition this year, continuing with its aim of training new generations of researchers in these areas of mathematics that are closely related to physics and engineering. From 20 to 25 June, a large group of young researchers interested in focusing their research on geometry, mathematical physics and numerical integrators - masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students - lived together at La Cristalera, in Miraflores de la Sierra (Madrid), where the meeting was held.

El Escorial hosts a congress on field theory geometry

The Real Centro Universitario María Cristina de El Escorial hosted The geometry of field theories

From 13 to 15 June 2024, the conference The geometry of field theories brought together experts in the geometric formulation of field theory at the Real Colegio María Cristina de El Escorial (Madrid), with the aim of sharing the latest results and discussing new lines of research and applications. "The geometric formulation of field theory is a powerful mathematical framework for various physical theories, such as modified gravity, string theories and gauge theories," says David Martín de Diego, CSIC researcher at ICMAT and one of the organisers of the event. "The geometric approach characterises the constraints, provides methods for reducing symmetries, integrating numerically and detecting algebraic structures for quantization," he adds.

Álvaro Romaniega's work, under the direction of Daniel Peralta-Salas (ICMAT-CSIC) and Alberto Enciso (ICMAT-CSIC), is one of those selected for the 2nd CSIC Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis. It is one of the four winners in the global area of Society, out of a total of 20. In this edition, 190 proposals were received. Romaniega presented her thesis, "Asymptotic probability techniques in monochromatic waves and fluid mechanics", in September 2022. The thesis "addresses different issues related to probability, partial differential equations, fluid mechanics and some aspects of economic theory", according to its author.

On Friday, 28 June, Peruvian writer Rafael Dumett, author of the novel El Espía del Inca (Alfaguara, 2022), took part in a scientific-literary discussion organised by the ICMAT at the Cervantes y Compañía bookshop (Calle del Pez, 27, Madrid): "Quipus: mathematics and Inca stories". He was joined by Concepción Reverte Bernal, honorary collaborator of the University of Cádiz, who contributed her vision as a linguist and specialist in Spanish-American literature, and Manuel de León, CSIC research professor at ICMAT.
