For the past 18 years, the ICMAT International Summer School on Geometry, Dynamics and Field Theory has brought together each year early-career researchers from around the world, along with undergraduate and master’s students interested in differential geometry and its applications to fields such as physics, engineering and the development of numerical methods. This area studies the equations that describe the behaviour and time evolution of physical systems, which possess important geometric properties that have driven the development of branches such as Riemannian, symplectic and multisymplectic geometry.

This week, from 22 to 26 June, more than 35 researchers from Belgium, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are gathering at La Cristalera Residence Hall (Miraflores de la Sierra), a teaching facility of the Autonomous University of Madrid, for the 18th edition of the Summer School. “This year’s programme consists of three six-hour mini-courses covering topics that are not usually taught at undergraduate or master’s level: geometry, dynamics and field theories, including aspects of numerical simulation,” explains David Martín de Diego (ICMAT-CSIC), co-organiser of the Summer School.
The three courses are taught by Alberto Ibort (ICMAT–Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), Cecilia Pagliantini (University of Pisa, Italy) and Luca Vitagliano (University of Salerno, Italy). “In addition, participants have the opportunity to give a 15-minute talk or present a poster, which encourages interaction among everyone attending,” adds Martín de Diego. Indeed, fostering connections and potential collaborations among participants is one of the Summer School’s defining features. The programme includes free time in the afternoons, and participants stay together at La Cristalera throughout the five-day event.

In addition to Martín de Diego, this year’s edition has been organised by María Barbero Liñán (Technical University of Madrid), David Iglesias-Ponte (University of La Laguna, ULL-CSIC Network), Juan Carlos Marrero (University of La Laguna, ULL-CSIC Network) and Edith Padrón (University of La Laguna, ULL-CSIC Network).
