The Embassy of Spain in Beijing (China) is organising on 14 October “Spain–China Exchange: Connecting Talent, Fostering Excellence and Cutting-edge Research”, a scientific event where representatives from leading organisations and institutions from Spain and China will share best practices and explore avenues for collaboration between both countries. Among the speakers, Javier Aramayona, Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT), will introduce the centre and its main areas of action. The event will be opened by Juan Cruz Cigudosa, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, and Chen Jiachan, Vice-Minister of Science and Technology of China.
“This joint session will focus on research excellence and impactful science in both Spain and China, and will provide an effective platform to identify and build new international scientific partnerships, as well as to exchange opportunities for mobility and talent circulation,” the organisers explained. The event is coordinated by the Spanish Office for Science and Technology (CDTI-SOST China, of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities) at the Embassy.
The event will take place from 9:00 to 11:45 (Spanish time) in a hybrid format: in China, it will be hosted at the auditorium of the Cervantes Institute in Beijing, while the Spanish participation will be online. Registration can be completed through the following link.
A meeting point between Chinese and Spanish science
The event will begin with a first session presenting scientific excellence in both countries. On the Spanish side, the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Centres and Units of Excellence Programme, managed by the State Research Agency (AEI) under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, will be introduced, together with its network, SOMMa. These will be presented by Cristina Espa, programme coordinator, and Antonio Molina, president of the alliance, respectively. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) will, in turn, present its international cooperation programmes, with Ning Liu, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Bureau at CAS.
The next session will feature presentations from four Spanish and four Chinese centres of excellence working in various areas such as health, mathematics, climate change, marine sciences and sustainable agriculture. In the mathematics area, Javier Aramayona, Director of ICMAT, will present the Institute and some of its research projects. The programme will conclude with a roundtable discussion on scientific cooperation and mobility, featuring representatives from the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), SOMMa, FECYT and CSIC.
The event is organised by the Embassy of Spain in Beijing through the Spanish Office for Science and Technology (CDTI-SOST China, Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities). It is held in collaboration with the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Alliance of Centres and Units of Excellence (SOMMa), the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Cervantes Institute in Beijing, the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
