The science carried out in European centres and laboratories will once again take to the streets on 25 September for the European Researchers’ Night. ICMAT is once again joining the CSIC centres and institutes at the Cantoblanco Campus (Madrid) to take part in “CSIC Calls You Tonight”, the major science fair that this year will be held at Espacio Fundación Telefónica, on Madrid’s Gran Vía.

As part of the programme, ICMAT will offer the experimental workshop “Mathematics in Motion: A Look at the World of Fluids”, in which Andrés Laín Sanclemente and Mencía Reborido, predoctoral researchers at the Institute, will demonstrate phenomena related to fluids and explain the physical and mathematical laws that describe them. The stand, where a series of different experiments involving water, cornflour, wine, tubs and bottles will take place, will be open from 16:00 to 20:00.

In addition to this initiative, the fair will feature dozens of workshops and demonstrations led by the various CSIC centres at Cantoblanco, performances for all ages —Eclipsadas, Biolocas and the play Doro, about the life of Dorotea Barnés— as well as a science passport that visitors can fill in with stickers at each centre in order to receive a final gift.

A day packed with scientific activities for all ages

In the morning, from 10:00 to 14:00, activities will be aimed at primary school pupils (Years 5 and 6) and secondary school students (from Year 10 to Year 13), featuring the now traditional science fair, the Escape Road: In Search of Nobel and Non-Nobel Women, and a live recording of an episode of the Ciencia para Leer podcast, hosted by Carmen Guerrero (VACC-CSIC). Applications for places on these activities will open on 14 September at 09:00 via the link provided by the organisers.

In the afternoon, from 16:00 onwards, the fair will be open to everyone, with free admission and no prior registration or booking required.

The event is organised by ten CSIC centres and institutes at and around the Cantoblanco Campus: the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM), which is coordinating the event; the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (ICP); the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB); the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL); the Institute of Ceramics and Glass (ICV); the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT); the Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT); the Institute of Microelectronics and Nanotechnology (IMN); the Molecular Biology Centre (CBM); the Sols-Morreale Biomedical Research Institute (IIBM); and the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME).
