Proper good moduli spaces of vector bundles over curves

Abstract:
We study open substacks of the stack of vector bundles over a smooth projective curve admitting a good moduli space.
One such is the semistable locus which admits a projective good moduli space and is classically constructed via geometric invariant theory.
While there are other separated good moduli spaces containing non-semistable bundles arising as the moduli space of an open
substack, these do not admit a compactification in this moduli-theoretic setting.
We show this via classifying all open substacks admitting a proper good moduli space, a problem posed by Jochen Heinloth: there is only
the semistable locus with this property.
The talk is based on joint work with Andres Fernandez Herrero and Xucheng Zhang.
