On the universal cover of projective varieties

Resumen:
A conjecture of Shafarevich states that the universal cover of a smooth projective manifold should be holomorphically convex, in particular, it should admit holomorphic functions. This can be considered as a generalization of the uniformization Theorem of Riemann-Koebe for Riemann surfaces. We will survey old and recent advances in this conjecture which use techniques such as abelian and non-abelian Hodge theory.
