The aim of this activity is to support the NILS-ABEL 2014-2015 project “Discrete Mechanics, Geometric Integration and Lie-Butcher Series”. (010-ABEL-CM-2014A).
This mathematics research project focuses on computational solutions of differential equations describing dynamical systems in natural sciences and technology. It combines advanced differential geometry and modern algebraic combinatorics as two complementary approaches to numerical solutions of differential equations via geometric integration methods. The latter are designed to preserve geometric structures of the differential equations underlying dynamical systems. The NILS-ABEL project underway had a successful kick-start with meetings in Madrid and Bergen in 2014 and early 2015 resulting in quick progress including publications.
The main objective of this brainstorming workshop is to consolidate the recent progress made in the aforementioned NILS-ABEL research project, as well as to foster new ideas on eminent questions that have surfaced during research efforts in the past months. Both the advancements on the subject of the project and the resulting questions made it clear, that the existing interconnections among variational methods in discrete classical mechanics and algebro-geometric structures in algebraic combinatorics benefit both the understanding of existing as well as the construction of new numerical methods for differential equations.
