Comenius Project visits the ICMAT

Visit to the ICMAT and activity related to manipulatives for mathematics

28 students aged between 14 and 16 years, and 16 Secondary School teachers from Romania, Italy, France, Holland, Poland, Greece and Spain will visit the ICMAT within a meeting about Kinesthetic Intelligence, as a part of the Comenius Project about Multiple Intelligences on the Mathematic study AIMS (Alternatives for Innovative Math Study).



9:30. Welcome.

9:45- 10:45. ICMAT Introduction: “Mathematic in a Research Centre of Excellence”, by David Martín de Diego (ICMAT Researcher). Visiting the ICMAT.

11:00- 12:00. Activity: "Chaos and Mathematics". Florentino Bororondo, Full Professor in Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and ICMAT member, will speak about the use of mathematics to understand the complexity involved in the chaotic physical phenomena. Several showings will being carried out, namely:

  • Chaos: sensitivity to initial conditions.
  • Chaotic pendulum.
  • Chaos on electronic circuits.
  • Oscillating chemical reactions.
  • Networks: six degrees of separation.
