On the geometry of discrete contact mechanics

We will discuss the topic of variational integrators adapted to contact geometry, constructing all the objects in an analogous way to standard variational integrators in discrete Lagrangian mechanics. In particular, we will introduce a discrete Herglotz Principle and the corresponding discrete Herglotz Equations for a discrete contact Lagrangian. We show how this technique is useful to develop convenient numerical integrators for contact Lagrangian systems. Moreover, we address the problem of the existence of an exact Lagrangian function generating an exact discretization of the continuous motion.
