Severo Ochoa Excellence Programme

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) was for the third time accredited as a “Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence” by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation in 2019. The aim of this program is to promote research of excellence in Spain in all the fields of science. The accreditation is awarded for a period of four years and carries funding of four million euros for the stipulated period.

The ICMAT was for the second time accredited as a “Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence” by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in 2015.

Previously, the ICMAT obtained the distinction of a “Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence” for the first time in the first call for the program in 2011.

After nine such calls, the number of Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence and Maria Maeztu Unit have risen to 57.

The concession of this program to centers conducting ground-breaking research is a recognition by the MINECO that they are among the best in the world in their respective fields. Among the characteristics taken into account for selection are the impact of the research work and international scientific leadership. This process of selection is carried out transparently and in accordance with best international practice. Assessment and selection are undertaken by an independent Committee composed of active scientists enjoying recognized international prestige.

The program forms part of the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation subprogram for Institutional Empowerment (Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness). Further details can be found on the MINECO website
