Multiple zeta values (MZVs) have recently attracted much attention, both in mathematics and theoretical physics. They form a subset of the real numbers with remarkable families of polynomial identities between them.

The prehistory of MZVs can be traced back to Euler in the 18th century. In the last 20 years the theory of MZVs has developed into a subject right at the forefront of modern mathematical research. It comprises several challenging problems and major conjectures, that call for sophisticated tools from modern mathematics. Indeed, MZVs stand at the intersection of several mathematical areas, such as, algebra, combinatorics, algebraic geometry, Lie group theory, and number theory. Furthermore, they have strong ties with quantum field theory.

By inviting leading experts this ESF Exploratory Workshop aims at shedding new light on the theory of MZVs and related topics via different approaches.
