Workshop in Biomathematics

Mathematical Biology is a very active research field that is growing in a very impressive way. The advances in experimental biology are allowing to obtain a very detailed understanding of biological organism at the molecular level. This is making possible to use theoretical tools from mathematics and physics in order to gain a better understanding of the working of these systems. On the other hand, the fact that biological systems require the interaction of many different and very specific chemicals, as well as the fact that many processes take place at the molecular level yield to mathematical problems that often are different from the most commonly studied in classical physics. The understanding of biological systems is then triggering the development of new mathematical tools.

This workshop will be one of the two exploratory workshop organized by i-math with the goal of explore possible interactions between biology and mathematics. The first workshop will take place in Madrid in April 7-9, 2010. The second workshop will be held in Barcelona during the falll of 2010. Both workshops will be organized by ICMAT (Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas) and CRM (Centre de Recerca Matematica). In these workshops biologists, working mainly in experimental aspects will interact with mathematicians (and physicists) having previous experience in the study of biological systems.

We intend to promote the participation in the workshop of young scientists at the pre-doctoral and postdoctoral level who could be interested in working in this research direction. We are particularly interested also in the participation of senior mathematicians with an expertise not directly related to biology or applied mathematics, but whose insights could shed new light on biological questions. Due to this we will intend to promote the attendance to the workshop of mathematicians working not only in applied mathematics, but also in analysis, differential equations, dynamical systems, stochastic analysis as well as in algebra and geometry.

The workshop in Madrid will be focused mostly in three specific types of biological problems, namely Developmental Biology, Virus Dynamics and Neurosciences.

Organizers: Juan J. L. Velázquez , A. Stevens.

The workshop will take place in the headquarters of CSIC, C/Serrano 113, Madrid. (Sala de Prensa)
