From Metric Spaces to Complex Fluids.
Peter Constantin (University of Chicago)
19/11/2010, 11:30, ICMAT, Campus de Cantoblanco, Madrid
Abstract: I will present the motivation and a framework for the development of kinetic theories in metric spaces. I will then review the smooth manifold case, and discuss first Nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations, then Nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations coupled with fluid models.

Quasistatic crack growth in finite elasticity: a variational approach.
Gianni Dal Maso (SISSA Trieste)
15/10/2010, 11:30, Aula 520, Módulo 17, Facultad de Ciencias, UAM
Abstract: We present an overview on the variational approach to quasistatic evolution problems in fracture mechanics. We focus on the most recent results on brittle cracks in hyperelastic bodies, in the context of finite elasticity. The solution is obtained through an approximation procedure by time discretization. The approximate solutions are obtained by solving suitable incremental minimum problems.

Moving Frames in Applications
Peter J. Olver (University of Minnesota)
04/09/2009, 15:00, Sala de Prensa de la C/ Serrano 113
In this talk, it will be described a new approach to the powerful Cartan theory of moving frames. The method is completely algorithmic, and applies to very general Lie group actions. It will be discussed several new directions, concentrating on the analysis of invariant variational problems and the evolution of differential invariants under invariant submanifold flows with applications to mechanics, computer vision and integrable systems.
