Intensive Research Program in "Geometric Mechanics and Control Theory"

This semester long program focuses on the three themes of Geometry, Mechanics, and Control Theory, with their evident interrelations. On the one hand, the program aims to develop young researchers, offering them a serious and rigorous introduction to currently active research areas in these areas. On the other hand, the program seeks to increase the international visibility of the high quality research of various Spanish research groups which have in recent years made important progress on problems related to these themes. The program, which is ongoing throughout 2008, is based at the ICMAT (Madrid), with periodic activities in other Universities: Opening Workshop on "Geometry, Mechanics, and Control Theory" at the Universidad de Zaragoza, on January 30-31, 2008; a Summer School on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) from June 9 to June 14 featuring three advanced courses treating subjects relatecd to geometric reduction (and its applications) and stochastic mechanics; and the Iberoamerican Conference on Geometric Mechanics and Control Theory, from June 23-27, 2008, in Santiago de Compostela. Moreover, during 2008 there will be several one-day thematic workshops treating specific topics in these areas. In order to strengthen Spanish research groups working in these areas and to encourage the development of young researchers interested in working in these areas, there will visit the ICMAT will numerous junior and senior researchers, and there will be diverse seminars related to these visits. This semester program is coordinated by Juan Carlos Marrero (director of the colaborating research group at the Universidad de La Laguna), with the participation of various researchers in the ICMAT.
